DVD Replication Review

DVD manufacturing

As with nearly anything else, you get what you pay for. Not all disc manufacturing is the same.

Your budget, target audience, and marketing priorities will determine the process you choose. Duplicated DVDs are cheap but somewhat unreliable, making them acceptable for small runs where quality is a lesser concern.

But if you’re taking your DVD into the competitive retail space, or spending a wad on a campaign that will reach every mailbox in the city, disc quality shoots to the top of the checklist. You’ll need replicated discs that operate in any DVD device, regardless of spin rate or manufacturer.

DVD Duplication vs. DVD Replication

Duplication is another name for burning, which requires no special equipment or expertise. Commercial duplication is faster than the burning you do on your home computer, but the process is essentially the same. Disc labels and DVD jackets are printed with inkjet or thermal printers at a much lower resolution than the slick cover art of Hollywood DVDs. Depending on the brand of the blank discs and the equipment that does the burning, some of your duplicated DVDs will perform badly in certain DVD players — or they may not work at all.

Retail quality DVDs are replicated, or pressed from a stamper. The stamper is created from a glass master in a dust and smoke-free room. Replication is more technically involved and exacting, but it’s the only way to ensure all your copies will be the same. All DVD players will be able to read your discs: at home, in a moving vehicle, in a portable device — anywhere. Labels and covers are printed with a high-resolution, durable screen or litho process that gives your overall presentation a sheen.

What We Can Do for You

Few of our customers have the resources and know-how to produce all the files and artwork that accompany a retail DVD: the DVD master, label artwork, insert artwork and copy, and cover art ready for print.

Most customers need help along the way, which is why we offer services and consulting for every step of the process. At Digital Disc Duplication, we’ll check your finished files for accuracy, making sure they’re ready for production. Or we’ll take your rough ideas and develop a complete DVD project at a price that fits your budget.
