HD not safe from Pirates…
When will media producers learn that cheap manufacturing prices from overseas can often result in far greater expenses due to losses with pirated discs? Blu-Ray replication has the toughest copy protection applied yet this is all useless if the pirates are able to get their hands on original masters!
Latest news reports that counterfeit HD discs are being produced in China and it seems the pirates are packaging them in the same way as legitimate Blu-Ray discs and even including the hologram images which therefore makes it very difficult to spot the difference! But differences there are…..
True Blu-Ray discs are still expensive in comparison to standard DVD and the true Blu-Ray format provides full 1080p resolution for the optimum quality. Pirated copies however may look the same but they are actually being produced on standard DVDs to save costs and the resolution is at the lower HD at 720p. To the viewer, it is unlikely they can immediately spot the difference unless they have the copy and the legitimate discs to compare! Apparently one comparison is to check the visibility of fingerprints on the disc surface! Legitimate Blu-Ray discs show fngerprints stronger than the copies but to notice, you would need both versions availabe to compare!
The industry needs to help with the battle against piracy and a simple step towards this would be to keep the replication of CD,DVD and Blu-Ray right here in America! Why risk saving $0.01 a disc on the replication overseas when it could cost $millions in lost revenue to pirates!
