CD Duplicating Services & its Benefits

CD Duplicating is quite literally burning of blank CD-R media in exactly the same way you would burn a CD on your home computer. The main difference is there are racks of CD writers linked together enabling multiple copies to be burned simultaneously at high speed. There are many companies providing this mass CD duplicating service which sure beats doing them one at a time yourself.

By using a professional company for this work it also opens up far more printing and packaging options than you could do for yourself. Most CD writing software will have a simple sleeve and inlay design program with it but this will be limited to the capabilities and also when you print them on your inkjet the quality will not be too great. Printing on the disc may well be restricted too – either needing to use an adhesive label or simple black text only. While this combination may be more than good enough for your own library it would certainly not present very well as a demonstration CD or corporate presentation.

It is very important to understand that duplicated CD media cannot be classed as genuine retail quality product. The main reason for this is compatibility issues that could arise. When you duplicate (or burn) a CD, it is never 100% certain this CD will playback in any CD player or ROM drive. With many possible factors and combinations that could cause playback problems, it is impossible to tell which CD would have problems in which players or drives. For this reason all retail CDs have been professionally replicated. This process involves creating a glass master from which a stamper is grown in order to press, or replicate every CD from the same source. The pressed CD is then coated and printed for protection producing as near perfect CD as possible for every copy. This results in all CD players and drives being able to read all CDs.

Because the process of replication is far more complex, it is not cost effective to operate for low volumes of CD. It also takes longer to complete and therefore not ideal for producing CDs needed without delay. This is where CD duplicating comes into its own. With the right set up, it is possible to produce hundreds of discs, all printed and packed in a relatively short time. It is not uncommon to see companies offering twenty four hour turnarounds for duplication which would simply not be easily achieved with replication. Quality should still be of a high standard although the finished CDs could not end up in the shops for reasons already mentioned. Many bands and artists use duplication for selling at gigs or for sending as promos and corporations will produce presentations and electronic brochures for trade shows and with the time required to complete, advance planning is not quite so essential.
