Blu-Ray vs Up-Conversion DVD

As blu-ray replication services are added to the DVD replication and CD replication services offered by Digital Disc Duplication USA, consumers are still a little wary about the latest format on offer.

Until recently there was much confusion over high definition formats with HD-DVD being promoted by Toshiba and Blu-Ray from Sony. As we now know the Blu-Ray format won the day as Toshiba dropped out of the race but does this really signal the end of the confusion?

Another term widely used these days is ‘up-conversion’ and it seems that Toshiba are now throwing their weight behind this technology but what exactly is ‘up-conversion’? The claim is that standard DVDs played in an ‘up-converting’ capable player will appear to be high definition quality when viewed (as long as the player is connected via HDMI into HD capable TV).

This is an almightly claim to make and in the opinion of Digital Disc Duplication, an inaccurate claim to make considering the fact an already compressed file cannot be made better quality (to demonstrate if you take a digital photograph with your camera on the low quality setting, you cannot then change that file to the better quality image that would have been produced if the camera had been set at high quality to start with!) What actually is the simple fact is that you are viewing standard definition video through a better quality TV via a more pure connection (HDMI) therefore not experiencing any loss as there would be via analogue connections. High definition however it is NOT!

The format for true high definition has been chosen as Blu-Ray and therefore the simple choice is standard definition DVD or High Definition Blu-Ray. No in betweens.
